Saut d'Eau, or Sodo in Creole, is a city in central Haiti. Every July, an important religious festival takes place there, combining Catholic and voodoo values. The syncretism of Erzulie Freda, goddess of love and beauty in voodoo and whose translation into Catholicism is the image of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The waterfall is where thousands of believers go to bathe and celebrate their beliefs – a way of making an offering in the waters, which Freda likes, as does the orisha Oxum of Afro-Brazilian candomblé.
